Collaboration is inevitable, whether in our careers, schooling or social life. This past semester I have worked to find balance between my schooling and work. Through this, I’ve gained valuable insight into how brainstorming, critiques and suggestions are all necessary to reach meaningful results.

Growing up, I had a difficult time taking suggestions or criticism of my work. I was quite a perfectionist in that I couldn’t help but feel that any critiques were slightly personal. Yet, as I’ve grown creatively and gotten to work with other talented creatives, I’ve shifted my perspective on collaboration. My mindset has changed from previously becoming discouraged to now feeling motivated to improve. Here are some tips that have stuck with me that I keep in mind during any project I work on.

Tip 1: Critiques are not a Criticism of your Creativity

In my graphic design course, my work is regularly displayed to the class for my classmates to comment on. Going into my first critique session, I was terrified for my work to be perceived by others. But after listening to the critiques and making the changes to my work, I’m able to see both aesthetic and practical improvements. This has shown me that critiques should not undermine your creativity. Ultimately, you’ve already done the work that becomes the base for any critiques you may receive. You were able to create something worth discussing and that people want to see grow to its best potential. No project is perfect from the jump, and sometimes it takes multiple sets of eyes to notice things you haven’t.

Tip 2: Don’t Hold Back Ideas

Growing up, I tended to hold back my ideas unless I felt confident that they would impact the conversation at hand. I became hard on myself when it came to brainstorming, often thinking that if I shared an idea people didn’t use, it was a waste of time. Recently, I’ve come to learn how harsh I was on myself and now understand the value of sharing any relevant ideas that come to mind. You never know whether your idea will have that big impact unless it’s shared, and if it doesn’t, that’s ok! Most of the time, our ideas become catalysts for others to expand their thought process. Great solutions are discovered from bouncing ideas off of one another.

Tip 3: Push Yourself to Think Past the Safe Choice

The most important thing to ask yourself when working on a project is if the work is a good reflection of your company. This requires you to consider your audiences and stakeholders, recognizing what they want from your business and prioritizing that. By fully understanding your audience, you can experiment creatively with your messaging. Although it’s important to stick to a cohesive brand voice, don’t be afraid of creating content outside your norm. This could mean hopping onto current trends or trying out a new advertising campaign; regardless, audiences want to see fresh, entertaining content. This is another area in which conversation is key. Speaking with others and gathering multiple opinions is the best way to grow creatively without straying away from your brand image.

Collaboration is the backbone of the creative process. With each critique or suggestion, we learn more about our craft and improve our skills. It’s important to trust those around you, for that trust fosters innovation and can motivate groups to work towards a common goal. So, don’t be afraid to speak your mind, ask questions and learn from others — you never know which ideas will spark successful content.

In a world oversaturated with ads, promotional content, and branded messages, consumers are seeking something more than just a product or service. They’re looking for genuine connections and authentic experiences. As marketers, we’ve learned that understanding our audience’s emotions and motivations in order to connect with them, is of greatest importance. This is where the power of empathy in modern marketing comes into play.

What is Empathy in Marketing?

Empathy in marketing is genuinely understanding and addressing the feelings, needs, and concerns of consumers. It’s about stepping into their shoes, seeing the world from their perspective, and tailoring our message to resonate with them emotionally.

Why is Empathy So Important in Marketing?

In today’s world, empathy in marketing is essential. Consumers are increasingly wary of brands that come across as insincere or that seem disengaged from their genuine needs. When a brand employs empathetic marketing, it not only fosters trust but also lays the groundwork for long lasting relationships. This approach emphasizes telling stories that deeply resonate with consumers.

Empathetic marketing has the ability to tug at the heartstrings or address the real world challenges that consumers face. Beyond storytelling, empathy in marketing makes customers feel valued. When a brand consistently recognizes and addresses their emotions and needs, it leads to increased loyalty and advocacy.

How Can Brands Integrate Empathy into Their Marketing Strategies?

For brands aiming to make a genuine connection with their audience, integrating empathy into marketing strategies is pivotal. To start, it’s important to listen to consumers by using tools such as social listening platforms, surveys, and feedback mechanisms. This allows brands to truly understand their audience’s sentiments, pain points, and desires.

In addition to this, brands should address the real issues their audience faces, showcasing how their products or services offer meaningful solutions instead of just highlighting their product features. Finally, humanizing the brand is key. By spotlighting real people, stories, and values behind a brand, businesses can foster a deeper sense of authenticity and relatability.

Real-World Examples of Empathetic Marketing

By focusing on genuine understanding and emotional connection, brands can navigate the saturated market and create lasting relationships with consumers. The fashion and beauty industries have seen numerous campaigns that have employed empathy to resonate with their audiences.

For example, Rihanna’s makeup line, Fenty Beauty, made waves when it launched with a groundbreaking range of 40 foundation shades, catering to a diverse range of skin tones often overlooked in the beauty industry. The brand’s emphasis on inclusivity earned it both acclaim and commercial success.

Another example is Dove’s Project #ShowUs. Dove partnered with Getty Images and Girlgaze to create the project #ShowUs — the world’s largest stock photo library created by women to shatter beauty stereotypes. This initiative was a response to the fact that 70% of women still don’t feel represented in media and advertising. By providing images that genuinely reflected women’s diverse appearances and experiences, Dove took another step in pushing the boundaries of beauty standards in advertising.

These examples highlight the ways in which fashion and beauty brands, through empathetic understanding of their consumers, can create campaigns that resonate on a deeper, more emotional level.

If your business has an online presence, it is vital that you understand the essential practice of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy as a part of your overall marketing plan. Because of all the technical jargon involved, it’s easy to forget that SEO is actually something very simple: the art and science of optimizing your online presence to rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs). To help you further navigate the SEO landscape, we’re here to explain what SEO is more fully and guide you through the process of creating an SEO strategy.

What is SEO?

Optimizing your website — whether it’s an online shop, a blog, or a simple landing page — is the strategic process of enhancing your website’s visibility in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Essentially, it’s all about making your website more attractive to these search engines so they rank it higher when users search for related keywords.

Search engines use complex algorithms to determine rankings, considering factors like keyword relevance, website quality, and user experience. When you optimize these elements of your site, you can increase your chances of appearing higher up in the SERP rankings.

Creating an SEO Strategy

The days when you could simply stuff your website full of keywords and hope for the best are gone. Like any part of your marketing plan, it pays to have an intentional, focused strategy in place for SEO. Here’s how to create one in six simple steps.

  1. Set Clear Objectives and Goals
Ask yourself why you want to optimize your site. Do you want to increase organic traffic, boost online sales, or enhance general brand awareness?
  2. Conduct Keyword Research
In order to reach your target audience, you need to know the words they use to search for businesses or products like yours. Tools like Google Keyword Planner can help you identify these words and terms so you can incorporate them into your site’s architecture.
  3. On-Page Optimization
Now it’s time to optimize your website’s content, including its backend structure (title tags, meta descriptions, headings, etc.). Create high-quality, valuable content that addresses user needs.
  4. Off-Page Optimization
This step requires a bit more effort. You’ll want to build up high-quality “backlinks” from authoritative websites. Also, engage in content marketing, and leverage social media platforms to expand your online presence. Basically, let the search engines know that you exist on the internet in places other than your website.
  5. Technical SEO
Ensure your website is fast and mobile-friendly. Remember, search engines take user experience into consideration. This helps determine rankings, so make your site as appealing and easy to use as possible.
  6. Monitoring and Analytics
Once you have a strategy in place, it’s time to use tools like Google Analytics to track your SEO performance. Analyze the data you gather and adjust your strategy based on the insights it offers.

A few types of social media marketing

Content Marketing/Content Creating: This is where a company will make content and share it on a social media platform. It can be anything from a podcast, videos, emails, etc. These messages are personal and should help the company achieve its objectives and reach a specific audience.

Advertising/Sponsorship: This is a more formal way of using social media. It is a non-personal message that promotes, or sells a product, service, or concept. You are able to create and place the exact message you want.

Influencer Marketing: This is where a company can use a social media influencer to help promote their product. This influencer is trusted and has a loyal audience, so when they share the product, it raises brand visibility.

Check out this article about 10 different types of social media to learn about other types of social media marketing.

Which type of Marketing high schoolers respond to the best

Overall, most high schoolers respond best to Influencer Marketing or Content Creating/Content Marketing, specifically on popular social media apps like TikTok or Instagram. Personally, I find traditional ads are easy to scroll past compared to an interesting video that grabs your attention. With influencer marketing, these content creators already have a following, making it a perfect place to promote. However, it is crucial to find a content creator that aligns with the idea for your product. Many beauty companies will pair up with a content creator that has an entire page on that specific topic, making it relevant on that page.

On the other hand, making original content for a company or a brand can be extremely successful. Many popular companies now have accounts on popular social media platforms and are active in many different ways. Some comment on posts that mention them or will repost videos made about them as well as making their own.

How to stand out

There are many ways to stand out as a company and gain traction through social media. I think one of the best ways are brand trips. Brand trips are when a company takes a group of influencers on an all-expense paid vacation. These trips always get a lot of attention and influencers spend the duration of it promoting the brand and what it sells. These have proven time and time again to be an effective way to bring attention to a company and product.

Another great way to bring attention to your brand is make a TikTok account. On average, high schoolers spend 113 minutes a day just on TikTok, significantly more than any other social media site. It can take a while to gain a following, so patience is important. Once an account reaches a point of success, they typically continue to grow.

What are AI Influencers in marketing?

AI influencers are virtual personalities managed by brands or agencies. They are created using computer graphics and machine-learning algorithms to appeal to a brand’s audience. These influencers serve the same purpose as other real influencers. But they are designed to reinforce a brand’s particular marketing objectives. AI Influencers can wear a retailer’s clothing or visit their store — all virtually. They can express their thoughts about the benefits of products. They can help elevate a brand’s social media.

AI influencers have already worked for brands from Red Bull to Tinder, since 2016. They interact with consumers using conversation, photos and videos. Often hyper-realistic, they create attention-getting, stylish interactions with the products they represent.

What are some benefits of AI Influencers?

AI influencers work 24/7, whereas real humans cannot keep up this pace. This keeps active engagement rates high, and is beneficial to consumers engaging globally in multiple time zones. With round-the-clock content creation, these spokespeople can quickly build a large global following.

Often, they can create content specifically tailored to answer their audiences’ questions. Further, they can engage with thousands of consumers in a personalized way — without the conventional challenges of doing all of this as a real person. AI influencers, and their accompanying data, can also guide brands to find new or specific audiences. They can introduce new products, create more engaging content, and help optimize campaigns.

How do they help brands specifically?

Everything listed above is incredibly beneficial to growing a brand. But did you know AI influencers can also track consumer engagement so you don’t have to? These influencers can sum up analytical data from a brand’s work with them. That’s influencer and data are rolled into one. This makes it easy to view analytics and make decisions going forward.

From social media engagement to sales reports, an AI influencer can become an important part of helping brands build business. This data is valuable in offering ideas on which demographic to reach. It is valuable to know when to reach them, and how to reach them as well. Brands like Calvin Klein, Samsung, and Prada have all worked with AI influencers. These brands have incorporated influencers on social media platforms with success.

In the future, look for innovative new uses as AI influencers evolve. They’ll continue to talk with consumers and build value for brands in platforms beyond social media.

What is an influencer?

Who hasn’t scrolled through an Instagram or TikTok feed and stumbled upon a random person on an amazing vacation, eating a mouth-watering meal, or wearing a fabulous outfit and thought to themselves, “I wish that were me”? As social media has risen in popularity, internet celebrities and influencers in the marketing world have learned to use their influence and followers to promote products and lifestyles. Influencers are content creators who have the power to influence or alter the decisions of others. These trendsetters have become experts at producing effective “subliminal” ads reminding us that we “need” those shoes or we have yet to visit that vacation destination.

Finding your niche

The first step to becoming an influencer is to find your niche. My mother follows other mom influencers, I follow account that are more popular and targeted to teens, and my little brother is obsessed with the guys who do cool trick shots on YouTube. There are a multitude of niches on social media from health/beauty to fashion to travel to lifestyle/relationships. The cosmetic and fashion industry alone is worth more than five hundred billion dollars annually and frequently pays content creators to offer tutorials and testimonials. Companies often compensate travel influencers’ flights, cruises, and hotels in exchange for featuring them in their feed. Influencers are also eager to offer advice to anxious new parents in exchange for compensation and merchandise.

How is being an influencer a career?

Influencers have to be active and consistent. There are very few days off for content creators. The more popular accounts often post multiple times per day. Companies will pay to have these influencers on Instagram to do giveaways, OOTDs (outfit of the day), or short videos using the product. YouTubers will typically have unboxing videos or use the product somewhere in the video. Anytime you see a product in a video, the person is most likely being compensated for it.

Why is using an influencer a good marketing strategy?

People like to do what is popular or “trending”. If a TikTok star starts doing something new, chances are good that their fans will follow. Whether that is doing a TikTok dance or buying a pair of jeans that are “the most comfortable pants ever”. Consumers also trust a third party over the company that is producing the product. Social media users choose to follow accounts because they identify and trust the creators. When an influencer recommends a product, it often feels like a friend is recommending it.

Let’s be honest: we used to roll our eyes at influencers dancing on the beach and constantly filming videos in restaurants before we recognized their genius. These creators have a massive effect on modern society through social media platforms. Virtually all companies have begun to use influencers, making them major players in the marketing world.

The 2020’s Have Been Tough

The beginning of this decade has been a tough one. No one expected a pandemic in the 21st century. At least not one that would impact the way we live, learn, and conduct business. Covid-19 has forced humanity to adapt to the era of online learning, and remote work. Now that we have all had a taste for what its like to work at home I don’t think we’re going back to the office anytime soon. Or at least not back to full time positions in an office. In 2021 America experienced a momentous event: everyone started to quit their jobs. Journalists have called this “The Great Resignation”.

Following this, major companies in marketing and other knowledge industries like HubSpot, Twitter, Airbnb, and Microsoft announced that they’re switching to going fully remote or remote/hybrid. Due to this transition, more companies have started to look towards future advances in a new era of work. What comes next? The Metaverse.

What is the Metaverse?

So what is the Metaverse? The Metaverse is a virtual 3D world that can be accessed by using either a VR headset or through a computer. Its goal is to create a world that is more layered and connected than the internet. It will allow users to create their own avatars and converse with one another, making remote projects significantly more efficient.

What Might Business in the Metaverse Look Like?

So how does this effect businesses like marketing? Well, to start off, one of the many challenges in working from home is communication. It takes a very well structured team with consistent communication and clear goals to make remote work flow efficiently. The Metaverse would only help this work style. It would allow for more open communication and allow people to separate their home life from their work life.

Often times people blend their work life with their home life when they work remotely, and this would solve this problem. You would simply say good bye to your coworkers once work is done in this virtual world, and log off. You would no longer have this distance problem. And be able to have more effective collaboration while you’re there. Just imagine everyone having a shared virtual space where you can freely move around. It could be the future of remote brainstorming sessions.

A Cheaper Alternative

Business might want to shift towards implementing the Metaverse, because in the end it’s going to save them money. There would be no need to pay office rent anymore. No need to fly employees out to meet clients in other countries and rent them hotels. This gives smaller businesses a chance to do business with clients overseas. In a way, it could even the playing field to meet in a virtual world.

Having a Metaverse office might also allow companies to save time on trainings. With this new technology managers will be able to train new employees at a much faster rate. Instead of just sending them a standard pdf of the tasks they need to complete, they could jump into a virtual simulation that has been specifically designed and tested to maximize their efficiency. The possibilities are endless.

Is the Metaverse a Necessary Change?

It may seem like a sudden and drastic change, but that’s what life has been like these last two years. And as humans, we continue to adapt to all of these sudden changes. I think the way we look at work — at least in the corporate setting —has forever changed since 2020. “The Great Resignation” is proof of it. It may take awhile for companies to change, but I believe there is no going back to fully in-person at the office in the future. I think you could compare this time period to a time in history when we stop using horses and started driving cars. It was a sudden drastic change that the world was not expecting, but over time it just became the new normal. You can either adapt and stay up with the times and join your colleagues in the Metaverse, or stay behind. There’s no moving backward now.

AHA Moments are happening again!

AHAs and WHOAs. When the way the world of work is done shifts, like it did Q1 of 2022, you can expect a little bit of both. Our annual team kick off meeting this year was an AHA for us! Unfortunately, not everyone could make it. But it was the first time for us to meet two team members in person. They had joined us in 2021, but we had not all met in person yet. Such a great AHA moment!

We were also so excited to be onsite with our client last week. Their manufacturing facility inspires. Yes, we creative individuals love being in this environment because we can have lots of AHA moments together. Then, some of us go into a cave for a few hours after to recharge, taking all that inspiration with us to create. That meeting was the first time we met our client of several months in person vs via a screen. We hugged, natch.

WHOA, I’m not sure I’m ready for this.

In a catch-up lunch, Friday, a longtime advocate of ours was very anxious. And he admitted, he’s a bit angry. He starts international business travel again full throttle this week. He liked his pandemic routine. WHOA. We all kind of got used that didn’t we?

Another client of ours brought us on board recently. Their team is overstretched all the way around. Trade shows and conference are back now in person, and that adds a lot of extra marketing work to their plate. What’s extra hard for them right now is the fact that some of their clients are demanding online events as well. So, WHOA, they are now doing double the work.

We’ve been virtually ready for this for years.

Between all the client AHAs and WHOAs, it’s easy for us to just keep rollin’. Eleven years ago this month, we were founded on a virtual model. So, not much changed for us workstyle wise over the past two years. The rest of the world finally realized what a great model remote work is, and caught up to us!

Now the “Hybrid” work is emerging. Hybrid offices practice some time in the office and some time remote. According to U.S. News & World Report, the younger generations love the hybrid idea. But, they also love the connection of the face-to-face model. The older generation, who were the yuppies of the ‘80s, working 70 hours a week, now prefer not to be in the office all the time. And everyone seems to still be moving forward, getting things done. So remote and hybrid models are making more sense to a lot of workers.

Different work styles can work together.

Whatever style you or your team members or clients chose, be kind and carry on. You CAN work together! Remember professionals of all industries and levels are going through AHAs and WHOAs of their own as 2022 progresses. It may take some people time to settle in to their optimum work style, and make it work for their family, their team, and their company.

This is the time of year when I start thinking about goals and what I want to accomplish next year.  As I look through my goals, I realized a few things I want to remember in 2022:

Maybe You’re Already Reaching Your Goals

When I look at the life “buckets” I want to work on next year, I realized that a few of them, namely learning and socializing more, can be knocked out with my participation in Junior League.  Junior League offers members classes (we call them trainings) in all sorts of topics, everything from healthy eating to stress management to book clubs to special movie screenings. Each member also must volunteer as part of their commitment to Junior League, where I see old friends and meet new people.  It turns out, I have been accomplishing this goal all this time. Maybe you’ve been accomplishing your goals too without realizing it, you’ve just been accomplishing them within the context of what you’re already doing day-to-day.

Productivity Can’t Be Your Only Goal

Productivity is a great economic measure.  It’s not so great for measuring humanity

I had an epiphany one day, while bemoaning my lack of productivity.  I remember being so much more productive early on in my career. And then I thought, “Wait a minute.  I am doing work that is completely different from the work I used to do.” My work now is more strategic and graphic design takes time.  And that’s a good thing – it means I am advancing in my development rather than just churning out tactical stuff.

Seasons Change. So Should Your Goals.

Before you start trying to squeeze just one more task into your day, ask yourself, “Have my circumstances changed?  Has my career changed?” I bet you the answer is yes and yes.

The past two years have been a doozy, for a lot of people.  I’ve had friends who have lost jobs and started new ones, go through heart-breaking loss, or take on more care-taking duties at home.  Considering all of these, its understandable that people would want to cut back in one aspect of their lives to pour more into another part.

Which brings me to…

Be Kind to Yourself

Something Julie reminds us of, especially when things are tough, is that we should give the other person grace.  We should give ourselves grace.  Be a little kinder.  Be the light.

Perhaps instead of New Year’s resolutions or goals, I should keep these three realizations in mind and make them my themes for the year:

  • Sometimes you can reach your goals without inventing a whole new set of actions to reach them.  What goals can you stack together?  How can you accomplish your goals within the context of your everyday? For example, if your goal is to exercise more in the new year and spend time more time with your kids, maybe a family stroll after dinner or a weekend bike ride might get you closer to your goal.
  • Don’t do #allthethings.  Do #therightthings. Change up your to-dos in accordance with the seasons of your life.  Sometimes your home life will ask more of you than your work life and vice versa.  Sometimes your volunteer obligations will take over your life for two weeks straight.  Give yourself leeway to accommodate all the aspects of your life when they need to be addressed, not year-round.
  • Be kind to yourself.  In the grand scheme of things, we are on this planet for only a moment.  Let’s make it a good one.
